Evacuations Hasten as Sutlej Flood Warning Upgraded
8500 residents and 350 animals have been successfully evacuated
In a rapid response to an escalated flood warning for the
Sutlej River, evacuation efforts have been kicked into high gear. Approximately
8,500 residents and 350 animals have been successfully evacuated within a span
of 24 hours from various flood-affected districts across Punjab. Rescue
services are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those in the region.
The latest advisory from the Meteorological Department,
issued at 11 pm, has raised the alarm as the Ganda Singh Wala and Islam headworks
face the peril of "high flood" conditions. The Sutlej River's water
flow rate has surged to extraordinary levels, measured at approximately 122,000
and 152,000 cubic feet per second (cusecs) respectively.
Comparatively, just a day prior, the flow rates were
recorded at 115,000 cusecs (medium) and 120,000 cusecs (high) at the same time.
Meanwhile, the Sulemanki headworks, the third site under observation, recorded
a flow rate of around 86,000 cusecs (medium) on Friday night. (It's important
to note that one cubic foot is approximately equivalent to 28.3 litres.)
While the Indus River's water level also demonstrates an
upward trend, the rivers Chenab, Ravi, and Jhelum maintain a steady and normal
flow at present. However, the focus remains on the volatile situation at the
Sutlej.
The consequences of this situation have left a significant
impact, with multiple villages grappling with the aftermath. Bahawalpur bears
the brunt with 23 affected villages, followed by Khairpur Tamiwali with 12, and
Hasilpur with seven. The flood's impact at the Islam headworks necessitated the
evacuation of thousands, pushing them to seek refuge in relief camps.
